Where Time Meets Art: The Incredible Wire Mesh Basilica of Siponto
The Basilica of Siponto is unlike anything else in Italy. Reimagined by artist Edoardo Tresoldi using wire mesh, this unique structure blends ancient heritage with modern sculpture.
Originally built in the 12th century, the original Romanesque church has mostly vanished, leaving behind only its stone foundations. But now, thanks to Tresoldi’s project “Where Art Reconstructs Time,” the spirit of the basilica has been reborn—this time, made entirely of galvanized wire mesh.
Towering 14 meters high and weighing around 7 tons, this transparent masterpiece was brought to life with 4,500 meters of welded mesh. It took five months, a talented team of young creatives (average age: 25), and the support of Italy’s Ministry of Tourism, with a budget of €900,000.
This permanent structure is now part of the newly developed Archaeological Park of Siponto, a €3.5 million cultural investment. Tresoldi, who began his career as a film set designer, shifted his focus to large-scale wire mesh sculptures in 2013—and he’s been reshaping the way we see space and memory ever since.
He explains:
“The most important part for me is the on-site assembly. That’s where the magic happens—where parts are resized, reshaped, and adjusted based on spontaneous intuition.”
Now imagine this: saying “I do” in the middle of this dreamlike structure, surrounded by centuries of history and the ethereal beauty of art. If you’re thinking about getting married in Puglia, this awe-inspiring setting could be the perfect place to begin your forever.
